JOBS(仕事)
|
What is a "good job"? Some people might say. "A job that pays me a lot of money." But I'm not talking about the amount of money, though that's important, of course. I've had a variety of jobs in my life, starting in high school, but I've been happiest working as a teacher and a writer. So, for me, a "good job" is a job that I feel happy doing. I know it isn't possible to be happy all the time in your work. But I think you have a better chance of being happy when the work you do matches who you are as a person: your skills, interests, your personality, and the contribution you want to make to the world.

Thank you for your thoughtful essay. As I mentioned in my column, I think your comment about "honorable work" is an important thing for us all to remember. I also found it interesting to learn a little about your background working for the railroad. As always, your writing was very good. One thing I might point out is the expression "furious rage." Because both words suggest the same feeling, it feels "excessive" to use both. So perhaps this would be better: "I was furious over such a notion."

Again, congratulations on your new job! Just one more month and you'll be leaving Hiroshima, right? I'm sure you have mixed feelings about leaving, but it's great that you have an exciting future to look forward to. Anyway, thank you for another essay. You have been a very faithful writer! One suggestion: Instead of the word "derive" (which sounds too formal and academic), you can use the expression "come up with." For example: "I came up with my own answer."
